- Be careful to contact the Teacher Retirement Board of your age change at least three months in advance. The T.R.B. is so understaffed that if you are changing to Medicare and the supplemental plan offered through Sterling & Sterling, it will take them that long to make the transfer. If you write them in less than three months you will probably have to continue paying your local board until the transfer is made.
- If your spouse is covered by your local board plan and is younger than you, they will continue to pay the local plan rate until they reach sixty-five years of age.
- Important – if you are eligible for Medicare parts A and B then it should be to your advantage to drop the local plan. Call your Board of Education Health office to check on your particular case.
- Please Note – if you were eligible to retire prior to 1987 and didn’t – you may be able to receive full Social Security benefits even though you did not retire at that time. Even though you are not retired and visited your local Social Security office for their advice when you retired it does not matter. Call or write Barbara Jiantonio at the Teacher Retirement Board so that she can check your work record for the eligibility to retire as of 1987. The Teacher Retirement Board number is 1-860-241-8404 or 8402. Their address is T.R.B.,165 Capitol Avenue, Hartford CT 06106-1673.
There is no cost for this review. Remember that the SFCRTA is always at your service. The Teacher Retirement Board is directed by law to keep you aware of your rights but have only twenty-eight employees of sixty needed to fulfill their obligations to you.
