When you retire, you no longer have a bargaining unit to negotiate and protect your pension and health care benefits. The Governor and Legislature are now steering your retirement ship. The Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut [ARTC] is the only full time organization advocating and lobbying solely for retired teachers.

Your support is needed to continue its advocacy for retired teachers in Hartford.

Your local affiliate, Southern Fairfield County Retired Teachers’ Association, is an integral part of the structure of ARTC. You receive current information regarding the status of your health insurance plan and your retirement benefits from your parent organization, ARTC. Your support and membership in ARTC and SFCRTA is needed to continue its advocacy for retired teachers in Hartford.

What has ARTC’s advocacy in Hartford done for you?

ARTC was successful in getting passed into law a 10% CT tax exclusion on your teacher pension for tax year 20i5 and a 25% tax exclusion in 2016. They continue to lobby on our behalf for the 50% tax exclusion that was promised to us but has been put on hold for the last 3 years.
ARTC was successful at securing bonding and the current full funding of your pension.
ARTC worked to secure an increase in the State’s subsidy from $110 to $220 a month for retirees who must purchase health insurance from local boards of education.

What are ARTC and SFC RTA doing now?

In today’s climate, pensions are under attack. ARTC continues to monitor and protect your pension.
ARTC advocates to maintain the solvency of your health fund. Currently, the State is not contributing its promised amount annually to the fund. (You contributed to this fund all your working years in order for it to defray the cost of your health insurance in retirement.)
ARTC and SFCRTA members work to inform legislators that retired teachers are not part of the state pension system (a misunderstanding on the part of many legislators). We do not have the same benefits. We contributed 6% of our income to our retirement fund when working and could not contribute to SS.
