Hi Retiree family,
I have been trying to get the bill, Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision, (GPO/WEP), repealed since I retired in 1995. These bills were passed in 1983 under President Reagan. These bills hurt us all and take away the benefits we earned and paid for. The bills affect 15 states.
The legislators agree the bills are unfair but they feel it would be too costly to repeal. These bills are very costly to those affected. You lose 100 percent of your spousal benefits and 2/3rds of your earned Social Security benefits. They place many on or near poverty level. People will think twice before going into teaching and there is already a shortage of teachers in some states.
Contacting our legislators has not been successful. I think we need to educate and contact the present administration, President Trump (whitehouse.org/contact). This is not a political party issue it is a human issue. Start writing and calling. Help me to help you.
Thank you,
